LiDAR Level Crossing Compliance Assessments

Australia, NSW
Lycopodium undertook a desktop analysis of the parameters and sighting distances at level crossings on the Country Regional Network in New South Wales.

John Holland Rail (JHR) is contracted by Transport for NSW to manage and maintain the railway lines and associated assets located on the Country Regional Network (CRN) in regional NSW. The network spans 5,000km of rail infrastructure, linking regional NSW to cities, farmers to their customers, and resources to market.

Lycopodium has proven and extensive experience in undertaking level crossing sighting and compliance assessments for John Holland Rail on the Country Regional Network (JHRCRN). Using aerial mapping captured in August 2014 and November 2019, Lycopodium undertook a desktop analysis of the level crossings parameters and sighting distances, with verification via survey on site. The outcome of the survey was a recommendation to JHR on what controls will be required for non-compliant level crossings.

Through this experience, we have streamlined the desktop analysis of level crossings to ensure that results are repeatable and defendable. This is the fourth LiDAR Level Crossings Assessment Project completed on the Country Regional Network totalling over 800 level crossings and capturing every passive level crossing on the network.

The CRN links broad parts of regional NSW with interstate and metropolitan rail systems in addition to supporting customers transporting coal, grain, cotton, minerals and containerised freight to domestic and export markets.
